Serra da Groba, a walk through the natural treasure in Oia
Oia, along with their neighboring town councils of Baiona, A Guarda, Gondomar and Tomiño, houses one of the great natural wonders that Galicia has, "A Serra da Groba".
From our camping, we want to encourage you, if you have time, to discover and enjoy a different day surrounded by beauty and nature. Our recommendations? Pay special attention to the main points that you should not miss if you decide to spend the day in this beautiful place:
Beginning at "Virxe da Rocha"
If you have car (just 9 minutes from our camping), do not hesitate to take this emblematic place as a starting point for your route.
The "Virxe da Rocha" is a statue of 15 meters high built in granite on stones of Mount Samson, whose hands and face are in white marble. This creation of Antonio Palacios in 1930, has a viewpoint on her right hand from which you can admire incredible views of Bay of Baiona, Monteferro and Cies Islands.
Pozas de Mougás
These natural pools, of which we have already spoken in our blog, are in the western slope of this mountain range. Alongside them are other elements that make this area unique and incomparable: the "fervenza" that forming the Mougás river, the natural pool where the river ends or the recreational area, where you can enjoy a good meal in the shade of the trees.
Wild Horses and "Curros"
Groba has a unique feature in Galicia: it has 2500 wild horses of pure Galician breed distributed throughout the mountain range.
It is very unusual to walk around these lands and not find a few wild horses grazing or jogging quietly. For this reason, in this zone abound the "curros": a rooted tradition of enclosures in which the horses are collected to cut the crines and mark them.
A way full of history
The human presence that inhabited these lands dates back 250,000 years, a good example of this are the Paleolithic vestiges found in this mountain range. Across the whole area there are buildings from different stages of history such as "mámoas", petroglyphs and other archaeological remains.
If you are coming to enjoy a well deserved vacation to Camping Mougás, or if you are thinking about to visit us soon, do not forget the camera and take a photo of all the faces of the wonderful Serra da Groba. Make your reservation!
